The 153rd Kentucky Derby runs on Saturday, May 1, 2027 at Churchill Downs, with the Kentucky Oaks the day before on Friday, April 30. Derby weekend is the hardest ground transportation day of the year in Louisville — roads around the track close, rideshare surges and then disappears entirely at the end of the card, and 150,000 people try to leave at once. A chauffeur who has not worked the Derby will not know where to be. Ours do.

Kentucky Oaks Friday, April 30, 2027
153rd Kentucky Derby Saturday, May 1, 2027

Gates at Churchill Downs open at 9:00 AM on Derby Day, and post time for the Derby itself is approximately 6:57 PM ET. That is a long day at the track — which is exactly why how you get in and out of it matters.

What Makes Derby Weekend Different

Three things break normal transport planning on the first Saturday in May.

The road closures start early and cover a wide area. Central Avenue, Taylor Boulevard and the streets immediately around Churchill Downs are restricted well before the first race. The direct route from downtown Louisville simply does not exist on Derby Day, and drivers relying on a navigation app discover that too late.

Drop-off points are not where you expect. Vehicle access near the gates is controlled, and the closest legitimate drop-off can be a considerable walk from your entrance — a serious matter in Derby dress and heels. Knowing which approach serves which gate is the difference between a two-minute walk and twenty.

Departure is worse than arrival. Everyone leaves within the same half hour. Mobile networks saturate, so calling your driver may not work at all. Rideshare pricing peaks and then supply collapses. Without a pickup point agreed in advance, you are walking.

How We Handle It

Pre-arranged pickup points

Before the day, we agree exactly where your chauffeur will collect you and at what time — a specific, findable location clear of the crowd flow, not a vague street name. You are told where to walk to before you ever leave for the track.

Chauffeurs who have worked the Derby

Our chauffeurs are briefed on that year’s specific closures and access routes, not last year’s. They stage nearby rather than returning to base, so the wait between you reaching the pickup point and the car arriving is short.

Vehicles held for the day

For most Derby clients we recommend booking the vehicle at your disposal for the day rather than as separate transfers. It costs more, but the car is yours: it waits, it repositions, and it is not competing for a slot on the busiest dispatch day of the year.

Airport transfers around the weekend

Louisville Muhammad Ali International (SDF) sits about eight miles from Churchill Downs and runs at peak capacity across Derby week. Private aviation traffic at Bowman Field (LOU) is heavy throughout. We track your flight and adjust automatically, commercial or private.

If SDF is full or expensive for your dates, several regional airports are within driving distance and we cover transfers from all of them: Lexington (LEX) at roughly 1 hour 20 minutes, Cincinnati (CVG) at about 1 hour 45, Indianapolis (IND) at around 2 hours, and Nashville (BNA) at approximately 2 hours 45.

Derby Week, Not Just Derby Day

The Derby is the end of a week, not a single event. We provide transportation throughout:

Opening weekend and Dawn at the Downs

morning workouts with breakfast at the track. Very early starts, typically before dawn.

Thurby (Thursday, April 29)

the local favourite. Busy, but manageable compared with what follows.

Kentucky Oaks (Friday, April 30)

over 100,000 attend. Closures and crowd volume approach Derby levels, and it is consistently underestimated by visitors.

The Barnstable Brown Gala

and other Friday-night events, where arrival timing and drop-off protocol matter as much as the vehicle.

Kentucky Derby (Saturday, May 1)

the main event.

Corporate hospitality

Millionaires Row, The Mansion, and suite programmes running across multiple days.

Vehicles for Derby Weekend

Vehicle choice matters more than usual here:

Executive SUV

the practical Derby default. Higher seating, easier entry and exit in formal dress, room for a party of up to six, and space for hats that cost more than the tickets.

First Class Sedan

for two or three travelling, where a quiet, comfortable ride to and from the track is the priority.

Executive Sprinter

for groups of eight to fourteen. Everyone arrives together, and there is room to change shoes.

Mini and motor coaches

for corporate hospitality groups and sponsor guests, staged as a coordinated arrival.

When we confirm your booking we will tell you exactly which vehicles are available for your dates, so you can choose.

Book Early — This Is Arithmetic, Not Sales Pressure

Louisville has a finite number of professional chauffeured vehicles and qualified chauffeurs. Derby weekend demand exceeds that supply every single year. Vehicles are committed months ahead, and the best chauffeurs are allocated first.

For the 2027 Derby we recommend confirming by early February 2027 at the latest, and considerably earlier for Sprinters, coaches, multi-vehicle programmes and full Derby-week packages. Enquiries in the final fortnight can often only be met at a lower vehicle class, if at all.

Practical Advice From Working the Derby

Build in far more time than feels sensible.

A journey that takes twenty minutes in March can take well over an hour on Derby Day.

Agree your pickup point before you go in.

Do not plan to work it out by phone afterwards — the network will not cooperate.

Decide your departure in advance.

Leaving after the feature race means moving with the entire crowd. Leaving one race early, or staying an hour after, is dramatically easier.

Tell us about your hat.

This sounds trivial and is not — Derby hats are large, fragile and expensive, and they materially affect how many people fit comfortably in a vehicle.

Confirm your gate.

Which entrance you are using determines the correct approach and drop-off point.

Corporate and Hospitality Groups

If you are hosting clients at the Derby, transportation is part of the impression. We coordinate multi-vehicle arrivals so your guests arrive together and on schedule, with a single point of contact managing the whole operation rather than each guest fending for themselves. Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Kentucky Derby 2027?

The 153rd Kentucky Derby takes place on Saturday, May 1, 2027 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Post time is approximately 6:57 PM ET and gates open at 9:00 AM. The Kentucky Oaks runs the day before, on Friday, April 30, 2027.

How far in advance should I book Derby transportation?

We recommend confirming by early February 2027, and earlier still for Sprinters, coaches and groups of ten or more. Louisville has limited chauffeured vehicle capacity and Derby week sells it out every year. Late enquiries can often only be met at a lower vehicle class, if at all.

Does surge pricing apply during Derby week?

Not with us. Your price is fixed when you book and does not change on the day. Rideshare pricing around Churchill Downs typically multiplies several times over on Derby Day, and supply then disappears almost entirely once the last race finishes.

Which airport should I fly into for the Kentucky Derby?

Louisville Muhammad Ali International (SDF) is closest, roughly eight miles from Churchill Downs. Bowman Field (LOU) handles most Derby-week private aviation. If SDF is full or expensive for your dates, Lexington (LEX), Cincinnati (CVG), Indianapolis (IND) and Nashville (BNA) are all within driving distance and we provide chauffeured transfers from each.

How do you handle the road closures on Derby Day?

Our chauffeurs are briefed on that year’s specific closures and controlled access around Central Avenue and Taylor Boulevard. More importantly, we agree your exact pickup point and time before the day, so you are not trying to locate a vehicle by phone on a saturated network with 150,000 people leaving at once.

Can you coordinate with private jet FBOs at Bowman Field?

Yes. We coordinate directly with FBO staff and flight crews at Bowman Field, meeting the aircraft where ramp access is permitted and handling luggage through to your hotel, the track or your evening venue. Schedule changes are handled between us and the operator rather than relying on you to relay them.

Should I book a vehicle for the day or individual transfers?

For Derby Day itself we generally recommend the vehicle at your disposal. Separate transfers work in normal conditions, but on Derby Day the vehicle you release will not easily come back. Held for the day, it waits, repositions and is there when you decide to leave.

Why Book With Us

We operate our own fleet and chauffeurs in Indianapolis, roughly two hours from Louisville, and we work the Derby every year. There is no broker between your booking and the chauffeur who collects you — you book with us, we deliver the journey, and we invoice you directly.
